Delicious Cakes :: Recipes

 "Better a small serving of vegetables with love than a fattened calf with hatred."
~ Proverbs 15:17

Lately the Lord has been showing me the importance of including my eager-to-help, younger siblings in my baking times. When my 8 and 5 year old sisters, and my 3 year old brother exclaim "Beppy, may I help you make the cake?" my sinful nature starts to brush them aside, while brushing their cheery smiles away as well. "Oh, they are only in the way" I tell myself as I watch them leave the kitchen. Often times I make excuses, one of which is that they get on my nerves when they help and that it takes more time with little hands helping. But I often wonder if this is God's way of teaching me patience! :) Now when my siblings are eager to help in the kitchen I try and say with a smile "Sure you can help, the Lord knew I needed 3 little helpers today!" I try  to be as Jesus and value children as He does as demonstrated in Matthew 19:14! I try to look them in the eye and give them a warm smile, which not only helps me remember to include them joyfully and willingly but it also tells them that I love them and value them.  I encourage you to include your siblings in your kitchen works! It not only teaches us patience but it also build strong relationships with our siblings!

This having been said, I would like to share with you some wonderful cake recipes that our family have made for many special occasions! I have always enjoyed taking over the role of making all the birthday cakes in our home-and from scratch! I just love to plan out what kind of cake I will make, then prepare it and finally to decorate and complete it! The smell of a freshly baked cake is always a comforting and delightful smell! One of which I love! :)

Happy Baking!

Basic Yellow Cake

Robby's 3rd Birthday Cake {Basic Yellow Cake}

I use this recipe for most of the cakes I make for my family members birthday It tastes almost exactly like a boxed cake and is a lot of fun to make!
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cups margarine or butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup milk

Heat oven to 350*. Grease and flour cake pans. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. In a large bowl, beat sugar and margarine or butter until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and eggs;blend well. Little by little add dry mix to the big bowl. Mix well. Spread batter evenly in greased and floured pans.

Cookies N' Cream Cake
  • 1 box cake mix, prepared and ready to bake or one batch of the basic yellow cake (above)
  • 1 cup crushed Oreo's
Mix cake mix and crushed Oreos and bake as directed below. Enjoy! {Note: When making this cake you might want to add a bit of water or some other form of moisture since the cookies will dry out the cake a bit}

Cake Sizes and Baking Time: (All cakes bake at 350*)

Two 8 or 9-inch round pans = 27-35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

9x13-inch pan = 33-40 minutes.

Berry Poke Cake
  • 1 cake baked and cooled (preferably baked in a 9x13-inch pan)
  • 1 package jell-o, prepared
Once cake is completely cooled from baking, poke holes all over the cake with a fork. Evenly pour the jell-o mix over the cake. Cover and refrigerate for several hours. Before serving frost with cool-whip and sprinkle with fresh fruit slices. Enjoy!

Oh Bethany I was going to make bread today during nap time for the same reason; to avoid all the "helping" hands. But once more this blog has convicted me. I will wait and bake during "energy hour" instead. And if I end up with 10 other hands in the bowl, Jesus will help me remember that I am a light for Him.

Your yellow cake looks delicious! I have been looking for a good cake recipe (the boxes are so full of gross stuff) and I shall certainly try yours next!

Thank you girls again for this _wonderful_ blog!!

In Him,
